With President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States will begin reimposing sanctions against Iran, the short, strange life of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal — formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action — has entered a new and dangerous phase. It did not indicate that the deal amounted to a comprehensive solution to all of the international community’s disagreements with Iran. The risks implied by Trump’s worldview are particularly acute in today’s fast-changing world. The Iran Deal is defective at its core. Trump’s utter failure to understand this innovative approach is bad news for Iran, for the world, and for the future of global governance.
