So China at least seems willing to play nice as Trudeau makes his first direct foray into Canada-Chinese relations. China’s ambassador in Ottawa says it’s “understandable” that Canadians are concerned about human rights. That’s the fundamental economic problem the Trudeau government has to tackle as it struggles to get Canada’s relationship with China back on track. On other fronts, the Trudeau team hopes to profit from the sour taste left by the Harper government’s unsteady relationship with China. It will be all the more difficult since they must not shy away from raising the touchy issues of human rights.
