A pickup truck backing up “very fast” struck three people in a crowd waiting for the start of Bakersfield’s Christmas parade Thursday night. The crash happened around 5:45 p.m., 15 minutes before the downtown parade was to begin. Witnesses said the pickup suddenly accelerated backward, driving through the crowd on 21st Street and hitting a parked food truck and the brick wall around a fire station’s parking lot. The driver fought with police officers who tried to get him out of the truck, witnesses told KBAK. The parade was delayed for about an hour and rerouted to avoid the crash site.
