A teenaged girl who was residing at a government-run welfare hostel in Dumbriguda on Friday drowned in the nearby Chaparai canal where she had gone for a bath as there was no water supply at her hostel. The incident sparked outrage in Dumbriguda mandal in the district, with tribal organisations and child rights activists condemning the lack of basic amenities at government hostels in the area. The deceased girl was identified as E. Rani (15), a student of Class IX and an inmate of the Tribal Welfare Girls Hostel in Dumbriguda. “On Friday, at around 8 a.m., Rani, along with two other girl students, came to the Chaparai canal for a bath. Expressing shock over the incident, Ms. Hymavathi also condemned the state of affairs at tribal welfare hostels.
