The Santals who are fighting for their ancestral land now in Gaibandha with very little to do for survival are no exception. Being tortured and evicted from their ancestral land is not a new thing for the country’s Santal community who had been displaced time and time for centuries, they said. They said land dispossession phenomenon among the Santal community started basically since the time partition of subcontinent in 1947. In 70s, another 23% were evicted from ancestral lands. But in the 2001 census, there were no separate data that states a specific size of indigenous population.
