The court castigated the government’s failure to halt the discolouration of the great 17th-century mausoleum, in northern India and urged officials to seek foreign help if India could not care for its biggest tourist attraction by itself. Environmentalists asked the court to intervene after spotting sections of the marble turning green and brown, thought to be the result of decades of worsening air pollution, construction fumes and damage from insect dung.
