Conservation groups are concerned increasing tourism to Southland's Curio Bay will have a negative effect on the area's yellow-eyed penguin population. JOHN BISSET/STUFF A growing number of sightseers and campers have encraoched onto the endangered birds' nesting and moulting sites in Curio Bay. Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust field manager David McFarlane said the situation had coincided with an "unparalleled crisis" in the yellow-eyed penguin population. The trust was also "deeply concerned" with a possible expansion of the camping site into the headlands of the Curio Bay site. The society wanted the review of the Curio Bay Management Plan brought forward, because of the pressure caused by tourism, she said.
