Bangers to Bluff Rally raises $40,000 for charityJohn Hawkins Co-driver Pete Littlewood, left, and driver Sven Hanne originally purchased the 1978 Citroen car for $400 for the Bangers to Bluff trip, and then repurchased it at the Newfield Tavern auction for $500, saying it was cheaper to drive than fly back to the North Island. A car rally from Auckland to Bluff has raised about $40,000 for charity. The Bangers to Bluff Rally is an annual charity event organised by the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay in which a small group of adventurers travel for 13 days on roads less travelled from Auckland to Bluff. Rally organiser Peter Bailey said about $40,000 was raised in total for the two charity organisations. One of the car owners, Sven Hanne, purchased his vehicle back at the auction so he could drive it home to New Plymouth.
