Tourists in Portugal free to skip quarantine on return to England

Portugal has recorded more coronavirus cases than the usual threshold for quarantine to be imposed in EnglandUp to 75,000 tourists on holiday in Portugal were given a reprieve from quarantine today as England opted against imposing travel restrictions on the country. In a surprise move Grant Shapps, the transport secretary, confirmed that Portugal would not be removed from England’s quarantine-free travel corridor list even though Covid-19 cases in the country had soared over the last week. Today Portugal recorded 23 cases per 100,000 in a seven-day period, above the usual threshold of 20 for quarantine to be imposed. However, Mr Shapps said there would be “no English additions or removals” to the travel corridor list. This is despite quarantine being imposed on large numbers of other countries that have exceeded the threshold, including Spain and France.
