British Rowing medal hopes cut adrift with Jürgen Grobler


Jürgen Grobler made plenty of tough decisions as one of the most successful Olympic coaches of all time — but none startled like the cold, abrupt end to his three decades running British Rowing’s gold factory. It has been said that Grobler stepped down, his work done. The East German had been expecting to work until the coronavirus-delayed Tokyo Olympic Games next summer. He had, after all, been preparing with characteristic drive since Rio de Janeiro in 2016 when Team GB, for the third time in a row, finished top of the medal table on the rowing lake. However, it became clear in talks with British Rowing that the ground had shifted.
