Kenya’s natural heritage might have had a good break from human interference as international tourists were locked out by the ban on international travel. Our country has developed a rather unfortunate stance towards our natural heritage whose premier product is parks, beaches and conservancies, as a product for international tourism. No, our natural heritage has been branded and designated as the preserve of international tourists! Efforts to interest Kenyans in local tourism therefore often end up in one altercation or another, unnecessarily portraying locals as incapable of ‘sensible’ interaction with our natural heritage. Such a model, if and when developed, will prioritise the myriad of Kenyan heritage and additional sources of income for local communities, create employment without eroding identity for communities, while still earning Kenyan the much-coveted foreign exchange.
