The annual Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake, which is surely among England’s more erratic traditions, is a chase to the bottom. A replica round of Double Gloucester is sent tumbling down a steep slope as participants attempt to catch up. On May 27, with thousands of spectators cheering, Torontonian Mark Kit threw himself down Cooper’s Hill and walked away a winner. As the BBC reports, inspired to partake in the “death-defying” battle by watching videos of cheese rolling as a child, the 21-year-old won the final men’s downhill race at the rogue event. The Gloucester cheese roll happens on the second public holiday of May each year, and there are multiple events held for men, women and children.
