Terry Glavin: 'Hong Kong is dying,' and Canada doesn't seem to care

It’s less than reassuring that as Hong Kong disappears into Beijing’s gaping maw in real time, before our very eyes, all Canada has managed to do is raise “serious questions” with the increasingly autocratic hybrid regime that ostensibly governs the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The law would require Hong Kong authorities to transfer criminal suspects to China, without any review by Hong Kong’s purposely hamstrung legislature. “Hong Kong is dying,” Fenella Sung, the 60-year-old co-ordinator of the Vancouver-based Friends of Hong Kong group told me on Tuesday. A delegation of Hong Kong’s democrats led by Martin Lee, founder of Hong Kong’s Democratic Party, met with officials in Ottawa earlier this month. About 200,000 Canadians are immigrants from Hong Kong, and roughly 300,000 Canadians live and work in Hong Kong.
