Barbara Bowman reaped the benefits of attending summer camp during the Second World War. “Camp is a very important thing for kids and so many of them can’t get it,” she said in a phone interview from her Toronto home. Bowman said her camp experience came at a time where children across the country had to contend with not having their fathers around, as thousands of men volunteered to serve overseas. “Being with all those other girls was wonderful,” she said of Camp Kitchikewana, which marks its 100th year of existence this September. She walked away with her life-saving certification from the Royal Life Saving Society, which provided training aimed at preventing drowning and water-related injuries.
