A Toronto firefighter was seriously injured after he plunged from the top floor of an abandoned building early Saturday morning while battling a fire. At around 3 a.m., Toronto Fire arrived to a blaze on Mutual St., north of Gerrard St., and encountered a “serious working fire, heavy flames and smoke,” Acting Chief Jim Jessop told media at the scene after the fire was put out. “During the firefighting operations, one of our staff, while conducting a primary search, ended up falling from the top floor of this building.”The building is a three-storey row house, and the firefighter in question fell roughly 9 metres and landed in an alcove, Jessop said. Although fire crews knocked the fire down quickly, the damage caused is “extensive.”Paramedics received a call from Toronto Fire shortly before 3:30 a.m. and rushed to the scene to transport the injured man to hospital. Jessop said he’d personally visited the man in hospital, and that he’s “really happy to report that the firefighter, although suffering a number of fractured ribs, is expected to fully recover.”
