The federal government says it will offer financial compensation to Inuit in Nunavik for the devastation caused by the mass slaughter of their sled dogs decades ago. Inuit turned to snowmobiles for transportation after the dog sled slaughter, but they were expensive and hard to come by. The machines were expensive and not as reliable as sled dogs, which could find their way home in blizzards.
