The zoo’s 20-year-old female Bactrian camel, Alice, gave birth to a male calf last Tuesday. According to a post on the zoo’s Facebook page, Alice gave birth after a 13-month gestation. That’s typical for the two-humped Bactrian camels, which are native to the rocky deserts of Central Asia. The male calf, whose name has not yet been announced, has an important month ahead. According to the zoo, the first 30 days are critical for baby camels, but the calf appears healthy and is feeding well.
