Marni Soupcoff: Is Canada Post delivering inequality?

Of prime importance is the union’s contention that rural and urban carriers do equal work of equal value and thus deserve equal compensation. While urban and rural carriers both deliver the mail, there are differences in the conditions they face: longer distances for rural carriers, more traffic for urban ones; problems with weather and roads on rural routes; more individual homes on urban routes. Rural carriers can earn as much as their urban counterparts, sometimes more. The same is true in rural areas: men and women carriers do the same job and have the same pay and conditions. According to the CUPW, the tentative agreement reached with Canada Post includes the establishment of a pay equity committee for rural and suburban carriers, to report in 19 months.
