Toronto Blue Jays hire Ben Cherington, former Red Sox GM, as vice-president of baseball operations

The Toronto Blue Jays have made another late-season front-office hire. A little more than a year after it was announced Mark Shapiro would be joining the organization as president and CEO, the Jays hired former Boston Red Sox GM Ben Cherington as VP of baseball operations on Wednesday afternoon, at the same time as they were continuing their September skid by falling 8-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays at Rogers Centre. Cherington will report to GM Ross Atkins and, according to a press release from the Jays, the 42-year-old will “impact every aspect of baseball operations, with an emphasis on player development.”Cherington will “work closely” with Blue Jays director of player development Gil Kim. Previously, Cherington served as the executive vice-president and general manager of the Red Sox from October 2011 until August 2015 before taking some time to teach at Columbia University. Cherington spent one season as a scout for the Cleveland Indians before joining the Red Sox in 1999 where he held many positions including area scout, coordinator of international scouting and director of player development.
