In what was likely his second-last start of the season, Francisco Liriano made the case for more turns on the hill. Liriano struck out six, surrendered only three hits and, crucially, did not allow another walk after those opening jitters. Liriano had surrendered the second-most walks in baseball heading in, but has now walked only five batters in his three starts since returning from the bullpen. New York is now five games back of Toronto with three games remaining in the series. A Toronto win on Saturday would mean the Yanks would need to win the final two games just to crawl back to where they started heading in.
