Cheap here doesn’t mean inferior since these solutions are often better than the more expensive, high-tech solutions. Manufacturers only added mirrors because they did not want to invest their time, effort and money into making faster elevators. Most elevator manufacturers returned to the drawing board to design faster elevators, which was expensive. World War II era carriers carried propeller-driven airplanes, which required shorter runways to take-off and land. One solution to these problems was to build larger aircraft carriers with longer runways.
