You may have seen or heard about a different Wordle answer appearing after the initial one for the May 9, 2022 puzzle. The New York Times initially had a different, controversial answer to Monday’s puzzle for some of those who played the game. The original answer was “FETUS,” sparking backlash and a “midnight panic” among The New York Times games team because the randomly selected word was connected to the recent news of the draft opinion on abortion leaked from the Supreme Court. “[S]ome users may see an outdated answer that seems closely connected to a major recent news event,” The Times said in a statement explaining the word change. “This is entirely unintentional and a coincidence — today’s original answer was loaded into Wordle last year.”Midnight panics are an integral part of journalism.
