We need to be really clear on this matter; the laws throughout all 50 states and promulgated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration require cyclists to ride with the flow of traffic. This matter has been studied many times over many years, and studies have shown that riding to the right is the only way to provide the greatest safety to cyclists, motorists and pedestrians. For anyone to suggest that the same travel lane of a road should be used for traffic traveling in opposite directions is ill-conceived, ludicrous and dangerous. In his letter, Mr. Wallace fails to recognize that cyclists enjoy the same rights to the use of roadways as motorists. The motorists’ responsibility is to provide cyclists with adequate clearance when passing.
