The pressure chamber on board OceanGate's 22-ft vessel suffered a 'catastrophic implosion', authorities revealed on Thursday, and the men aboard tragically perished. The implosion would have been caused by a sudden change from low to high pressure inside the sub, possibly triggered by a defect in the sub's walls. A 'catastrophic implosion' is a violent or dramatic implosion event involving a brittle structure – as well as the opposite of an explosion due to pressure changes. In the case of Titan, the sudden change from relatively low pressure inside the sub to incredibly high pressure caused the sudden and catastrophic implosion and structural crush. 'The pressure outside the sub pushing inward was about 400 times that inside the sub pushing out.
