Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, Your leading article “Wellness Cheque” (Mar 10) offers a welcome way out of the longstanding debate about improving the NHS. Being free at the point of use for an overcrowded system only imposes other costs on patients, such as waiting lists and treatment in corridors. A “free” system also discourages people from looking after their own health. The NHS, founded in 1948, needs rethinking in a more populous, more demanding and more fiscally hard-up age. But as you point out, 44 per cent of those aged 25 to 34 are willing to go private.
