Sir, The only clear result from the European election result (reports, May 27) is that we very much remain the “disunited kingdom”. Nigel Farage’s Brexit party may have won the largest number of seats, but anti-Brexit parties won the largest number of votes overall. It is also important to flag up that Mr Farage’s “brand new party” boasts belie the fact that primarily it hoovered up the old Ukip vote and added a relatively small additional number of disaffected Tory and Labour “Leavers” to its ranks. The spectacular collapse in both Tory and Labour votes must propel us in the direction of asking the electorate to break the Brexit impasse through a second referendum, general election or, arguably, both.
