Jack Lyon is congratulated on his birthday by serving RAF personnel. Yesterday the last survivor of the most famous Second World War breakout celebrated his 100th birthday. Mr Lyon was 79th in the queue waiting to escape Stalag Luft III, in what was then southeast Germany and is now Poland, in 1944. He was 23 and had been about to enter the tunnel codenamed Harry when it was spotted. He says that he knew the chances of success were slim.
