OPINION: It took more than 20 years of living here until my neck hairs finally tingled during the singing of our national anthem. But it wasn't the words we all know from the first two verses of God Defend New Zealand that caused my nervous system to perk up. But its old-fashioned English words need a workover​ to make it relevant and better understood in the 21st century. The first English verse, "God of Nations! Here's where they should start:Replace the first English verse with the second English verse, andSecularise it, andRemove gendered language.
