Friday, July 15, 2016 Thousands protest rate hikes across countryA woman with a banner saying “no to the rate hikes” and “goodbye Aranguren” is pictured in yesterday’s protest. President Mauricio Macri faced yesterday the largest demonstrations against his administration yet, as sizeable crowds gathered in dozens of public squares and intersections decrying the steep rate hikes instituted by the government over the last few months. “In some regions with terrible temperature conditions there were hikes of up to a thousand percent,” he said. But Aranguren still has the backing of the president, and changes in the cabinet are not seen as likely in the short term. No single massive crowd was seen in the streets as in the country’s most historic political protests of the past, but overall thousands gathered in a more sparsely fashion across different local hubs.
