Thousands of new viruses and diseases will jump from animals to humans by 2070, Georgetown University study predicts

A new study has warned humanity should brace for thousands of new and emerging viruses and diseases to jump from animals to humans in the coming decades, with climate change the chief culprit. The Georgetown University study , titled Climate change increases cross-species viral transmission risk, published today in Nature , predicted at least 15,000 new cross-species viral transmissions to happen by 2070, if global temperatures rise by 2 Celsius. Climate change is predicted to increase the transmission of viruses from animals to humans, according to a new study. The movement of wild animals due to climate change is predicted to lead to at least 15,000 viral transmissions between species by 2070, a study has found. "Surprisingly, we find that this ecological transition may already be underway, and holding warming under 2°C within the century will not reduce future viral sharing."
