Over 4,000 kilos of mutton and chicken biryani were cooked and distributed as ‘prasad’ at the 84th edition of the annual festival at Muniyandi Temple in Vadakkampatti village, near Madurai. Throughout the night, a battery of men dished out batches of biryani to scores of people who thronged the place, taking part in festivities. The hamlet came alive with colourful cultural programmes and open-air movie screenings, apart from bright decorations and lightings. The festival retains some typical elements of a village mela, and the biryani is the highlight of it all. Here are glimpses from the mega event.
