More than words, the world is hoping for Mr. Kim to make meaningful and verifiable steps toward lasting peace. China is also a major supplier of foreign currency earned from Chinese tourists visiting North Korea, according to a Southeast Asia expert. Today, North Korea serves as a buffer to the more than 23,400 US soldiers guarding the 38th parallel, along with South Korea’s military forces. For peace to happen, North Korea would need to forego its nuclear ambition in a manner that international stakeholders could observe and inspect.
