Going public about the rape “was terrifying and amazingly empowering, all at the same time,” the 52-year-old Perazzo says. It can be healing and liberating to come forward, say victims — or survivors, as many prefer to be called. But many did not, despite the possible consequences of going public. “Know that you don’t have to share your story to be a survivor,” says Farhan, 34, of Portsmouth, England.
