All agreed that the whole BC Corrections system needs an overhaul or more deaths like Murphy’s are inevitable. They had been living together for the past seven days in a segregation cell — more commonly known as solitary confinement. But Saul, the correctional officer, testified that, at least where she worked, “almost everybody” had a cellmate. To officers who have served in BC Corrections facilities, these types of assaults come without warning and are over in seconds. Crown and BC Corrections were all asked how many times police have been called to investigate jailhouse assaults, but none provided a detailed response.
