I would roam the surrounding areas of Jalan Laksamana, Jalan Cochrane, Jalan Shelly and Jalan Peel on my bicycle with a few others, enjoying the rush of wind on our faces. Adjacent to us sat our teachers — Mrs Ooi, Mrs Jayanathan, Mrs Wong, Mrs Peters and Mrs Yap. When Mrs Ooi took the mike, I had flashes of a younger Mrs Ooi, in her short tennis skirt and her hair always in a ponytail. Jalan Peel, Jalan Laksamana, Jalan Cochrane and Jalan Shelly had undergone a transformation — they were unrecognisable. I still am the teacher’s daughter, although my mother died some years ago.
