The story behind a photograph that captured a poignant pandemic moment on a rainy night in Toronto
It’s an image that, for a moment, captures intimacy instead of isolation during a year-long pandemic. Toronto Star photographer Steve Russell shot the scene in late September while out for an evening walk with his wife Gilliane, near their Leslieville home. Russell said for photojournalists, it’s often about happening upon the perfect moment by chance — and this chance almost didn’t happen. Russell shot the photo and continued walking with his wife.
