VOICESIt was Zimbabwe’s now late former vice-president Simon Muzenda who famously proclaimed in the build-up to the parliamentary elections in June 2000 that Zanu-PF was so popular that people would vote for this party even if it put up a baboon as a candidate. This was the extent of the disdain that the party of liberation had for the people it had presided over since independence in 1980. The Zanu-PF higher-ups genuinely believed that they owned the people of Zimbabwe and that they had a divine right to run the country. Anything else was just unthinkable.
