He said the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland should be given the resources and powers to police adverts on Facebook and Google. The watchdog would have to ensure that social media met standards set down by an electoral commission. The government has launched a consultation to ask the public for their views on plans to set up the state’s first independent electoral commission. It indicated that it would not be possible to police political adverts on social media without such a watchdog.
