The cold snap: What's behind NZ's plummeting temperatures?


Tekapo dropped down to 0.7 degrees Celsius early on Monday, with other areas around the country also seeing temperatures tumble. RNZ The weather took a dramatic turn on Sunday, with temperatures plummeting as a cold snap swept across the country. The cold southerlies were expected disappear by Tuesday, as a ridge of warm weather moves over the country from the Tasman Sea. However, in behind that ridge is another front of cold air which will cause temperatures to drop again for parts of the country on Thursday.
