I can't say 'basic' without associating it with a particularly common American TV insult. The term is used pejoratively, (alongside another other word) to describe middle class white women who like mainstream stuff. Which is a worry, because I often use the term 'basic' in the old fashioned way - that is, for clothing and accessories you frequent.
