There are three things you need to know about the oft-feared Yellowstone supervolcano. It rises into the crust, heats it, melts it to a considerable degree, and helps to generate the vast magma chambers that exist beneath Yellowstone National Park. The same applies to the Yellowstone hotspot. The plate’s still moving, which means that Yellowstone National Park will one day be supervolcano-free. So yes, Yellowstone National Park will one day lose its most iconic feature, but at least it’s not something the National Park Service has to fret about for tens of thousands of lifetimes.
