As the writer William Gibson once said, “The future is already here, it’s just not evenly distributed yet.” That is especially true when it comes to self-driving cars. The Uber accident raised many questions about the future of self-driving technology, including whether the technology is mature, whether it will be adopted, and if it will be, how soon. These LIDAR sensors allow self-driving cars to classify and detect objects like trucks, bicycles, signs, cars, lane markings and pedestrians. Between Tesla, Waymo and Uber, self-driving cars have logged almost a billion miles with fewer than 40 accidents and, tragically, some four fatalities. In addition, it is predicted that the year 2022 will be a tipping point for self-driving technology.
