No wonder it took 117 days for the Philadelphia Phillies to finalize their financial arrangements with Bryce Harper. Like a well-compensated Hollywood superstar who reels in even more money doing car commercials, Harper has incentives to make himself even richer. The terms of Harper’s historic pact also stipulate a cash grant of $50,000 for finishing second in the MVP voting and $25,000 for finishing third. He gets a hotel suite on road trips and the right to purchase a suite at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Phillies. He pulled similar strings last winter when negotiating a three-year, $75 million deal for pitcher Jake Arrieta, who went 10-11 for a Phillies team plagued by inconsistent hitting and woeful defense.
