The settlement that burned, known as the Jungle, has been a continuous site of ignored human rights abuses and mismanagement by Western leaders. Over the past few months, thousands of refugees joined the mass of tents near the French town of Calais. Its slum-like conditions were not fit for human habitation, and its lawlessness made it a hub for human trafficking. The French government might be responsible for destroying the Jungle, but we all run the danger being just as negligent as Nero. We can then turn to broader action by pressuring leaders in the United States and abroad to uphold the human rights of refugees.
