In last summer’s Ocean’s 8, amidst a star-studded cast that included Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway emerged as the surprising stand-out. With The Hustle – another gender-reversal reboot, this one based on 1988’s delicious Dirty Rotten Scoundrels – Hathaway adds to her flourishing reputation as a comedic actor. Reluctantly, Josephine takes her on as a co-conspirator, hoping to eventually dispose of her; Penny merely wants to learn a few things from Josephine and scam some in the process. Unfortunately, Wilson takes up much of the screen-time, reducing Hathaway to a mere supporting role. It keeps with the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels twist, but it defeats The Hustle’s ethos so swiftly, it’s laughable.
