One concern when attending a movie based on a popular media franchise is that it will feel like watching someone trying to play the game. But Pokémon Detective Pikachu (a title in desperate need of punctuation) actually feels more like watching someone trying to make the movie. Also, I’d never heard of Psyduck, an anatine Pokémon, yellow in colour and courageousness. He is Lucy’s familiar, and has a vocabulary smaller than Groot’s: “Psyduck psyduck psyduck.” Quite annoying, plus it sounded like a Brit trying to order cider in a noisy pub. Mime, a Pokémon voiced by – well, no one – whose interrogation by Junior Detective Tim rivals some of the best Looney Tunes humour.
