This year in northern Spain the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum turns twenty years old. Those who wonder how these plates were created to be self-standing and how they were brought to the museum can watch museum films that explain. Scenes show museum floor collaboration between sculptor and foreman as they pulled out rulers and maneuvered massive paper outlines across the floor to decide exactly where to fit each plate. The sculptor Serra grew up near ocean surf in San Francisco, California and later worked in a steel mill. The prominent show of metal in Gehry's architectural design, as well as that used by sculptor Serra, reflect the mined and milled resource that historically provided an economic surge and livelihood to Bilbao.
