It would be the first grizzly bear hunt in the Lower 48 states since the icons of the Western United States were put on the endangered species list in 1975. Since then, though, the population has contracted slightly, to 717 bears in 2015 and then to 695 bears the following year, according to annual reports from the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team. The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment holds a hearing on the 2018 Nuclear Regulatory Commission budget.
