What’s certain is that a new subject has recently been added: sexual consent. I’m a longtime rape-prevention activist and I’ve worked to popularize the “yes means yes” standard of affirmative consent, so I’m thrilled — and a little flabbergasted — to see the issue taking center stage. Affirmative consent isn’t a complicated standard. The affirmative consent principle is replacing a profoundly gendered system of sexual conventions in which men pursue and take sex, women resist or reluctantly acquiesce, and L.G.B.T. Some see the affirmative consent standard as too permissive.
