Regarding your editorial “Unions in La-La Land” (Jan. 15) and the same-day op-ed “L.A. Schools Have a Math Problem” by Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Austin Beutner: The blue-on-blue battle over teacher pay in Los Angeles is a reminder that fissures in our body politic are more complex than a simple blue-red divide. Regardless of which blue side “wins” the Los Angeles teachers union strike, there still will be unaffordable pension and health benefits that squeeze the school district toward bankruptcy, and there still will be a public-school system failing to give many students a decent education.
